Bowing your head

Bowing your head

What does it mean when a person bows completely before another person?

Our Answer

Hi John,

Bowing your head for a few seconds is generally regarded as a respectful greeting. Often associated with Asian culture, especially when accompanied with a slight arch from the waist.

Unfortunately, some see bowing your head is showing that you're weak and submissive. It's probably because of the saying that 'letting your head hang' is equal to 'giving up'. In some cases, that is true of course.

But when it comes to greeting, I disagree with the nod being weak. Showing respect to another human being is not 'weak', it shows strength... and character.

Thanks for asking!
